本剧一路走来，已经走过了八个年头，第九季是本剧的最终季。八年里，主人公泰德（乔什·拉德诺 Josh Radnor 饰）从梦想成为一名建筑师到当上了大学教授，从差点步入婚姻殿堂到婚礼取消，泰德一路上走得磕磕碰碰，悲喜交加。他经历过几段失败的恋爱，如今单身一人。尽管心里仍然放不下前女友罗宾，但他还是真诚地祝福罗宾与巴尼。与此同时，莉莉和马修也面临着人生的重要转折，莉莉即将前往意大利开始新事业，而马修也得到了梦寐以求的法官一职，夫妇二人会就此分离吗？在罗宾和巴尼的婚礼上，又会出现怎样的状况？“老妈”会用一种什么样的方式，与泰德相遇？

该剧改编自天下霸唱小说《鬼吹灯之怒晴湘西》，民国年间，军阀混战，民不聊生。陈玉楼乃卸岭魁首。他联手军阀罗老歪，入湘西瓶山探秘元墓。途遇搬山道人鹧鸪哨。搬山历来不为财物，只为寻找解除族人诅咒的雮尘珠。为了进入这座从未被人染指的神秘大墓，搬山、卸岭两大派在此结盟。
在1927年的“七一五”反革命政变中，为了营救共产党员任致远，夏恒煊慨然赴死，留下妹妹夏雨竹与丫头霜菊相依为命。柔弱的雨竹独自谋生，霜菊则在恒煊恋人肖成碧的引荐下加入了国民党特务组织。几年后雨竹偶然营救了任致远。致远牺牲后，雨竹受感召成为中共地下情报工作人员，与此同时霜菊在特务组织内获得重用和提拔。抗战爆发，雨竹和霜菊再次相见，却为了各自的任务针锋相对。雨竹发现肖成碧的弟弟肖君浩和自己承担着共同的使命，两人在战斗中相知相爱。1949年国民党败逃台湾，雨竹毅然前往台湾执行任务，被身为保密局军官的霜菊发现。为了信仰，雨竹在霜菊面前从容赴死，霜菊被震撼。雨竹在胜利的前夜用生命谱写了一曲壮丽的信仰之歌。
